Fact or Fiction

There are a ton of prevailing myths regarding search engines and promotion of ones web site to them. The days of submitting a site to Infoseek to see it listed in under an hour, tweaking it to rise to the top ten to rake in tens of thousands of hits in the same day...was awesome. To watch your site go to the top at Hotbot in under 3 weeks and get pummeled with that wonderful traffic...
So what is reality with the search engines these days?

Reality is the average webmaster must now use a multiple domain strategy to gain decent placement in multiple search engines and directories. But it's not necessary to buy multiple domains. A webmaster can get the necessary diversification that is needed by talking to his/her hosting company, and getting a few third level domains. A normal purchased domain has this appearance: http://www.domain.com
A third level domain would look like this: http://keyword.domain.com

The advantages here can be significant, as long as you inform your host that you also need your new third level domain on its own unique IP address. That may cost you a minimal amount of money to do, however it will be cheaper than running out and buying a new domain each time you find a new keyword area to promote. Its value to the engines is actually the same. You will place an index.html page on it, just as you would a domain.com. The engines have been placing more relevancy on root level domains, or your index page.

This should give you a few ideas, as each engine requires a different strategy. This obviously means a multiple domain or third level domain strategy to place well in multiple engines. The same is true for directories such as Yahoo!, The Open Directory Project (DMOZ.ORG), Looksmart, Snap. Each directory looks for certain criteria to determine if you are worthy of being listed. To employ the necessary techniques to achieve a listing, you must use a site other than the one you would "optimize" for a spidering engine.

Does this sound like work? You better believe it. Is it worth it? You better believe it.
A webmaster must make daily effort to achieve results that will be financially rewarding. The level of traffic expectations must also be addressed, as the surfers have become more savvy...they have learned to refine their searches. This means you must be more creative in seeking out your keywords and phrases.

The fact is, if you research what your end user is looking for first, before building the website...you will know what kind of foundation to lay. Its simple, you can build on sand...or on solid ground. Know your end user by getting inside of his/her head to know exactly what they are looking for and what they want. Deliver it to them is as few clicks as possible, and you win, the surfer wins, the engines win.
