Lesson - TV Scan Lines Made Easy
TV scan lines have become the uber-popular move in paysite free tours because it immediately gives the surfer the impression there will be live feeds. Going back to the example in the last lesson, the inset picture on the right side of this X Rated Live console ad uses the trick I am about to teach you.
To start with this lesson you are going to have to grab a file from me that you will use again and again. I suggest you create a folder somewhere called Photoshop Textures and store the file there. You'll probably create all kinds of textures eventually and it's good to have them in one place.
Step One: Download this file. This is a 1024x6 pixel, 2 layer Photoshop file saved in PSD format. It contains a 1 pixel thick line running along the extreme bottom of the image. It is saved in greyscale so that it may be used with all the functions Photoshop offers with PSD textures. Save it in the folder we talked about above.
Step Two: Once the file is saved, open up the picture you wish to put TV scan lines on (I'm using the duotone pic from Lesson I). With that picture open, now proceed to FILTER > TEXTURE > TEXTURIZER.
Step Three: Now select LOAD TEXTURE from the dialogue box and go to the place you stored the file you just downloaded.
Step Four: You can adjust the SCALING and RELIEF settings to set how far apart the lines are and also how extremely they show up.
When you are done, you have this:
Note: Whatever kind of greyscale PSD you save in your new textures directory, you can load up and use to effect your picture. I have horizontal lines, verticle lines, grids, and all sorts of shapes.
